When to use this form and how ?

I'm so confused when to use that form

1-machu pichu is a great inca city lost for hundreds of years .

I can't understand this form but i think if i said
machu pichu is a great inca city that was lost for hundreds of years . it will be right but when can i use the first form and is there any grammar rule for it

Another example :
Don't expose it to temperatures exceeding/that exceed 50 degrees

    Hello Ahmed,

We call this a reduced relative clause.

You can use a participle (-ing, -ed) insted of insted of the relative pronoun and the full verb.

    So in your examples:

Machu Pichu is a great Inca city lost for hundreds of years ...

                                                  (= that was lost)

Don't expose it to temperatures exceeding 50 degrees.

                                                 (= that exceed)
